Identify where fire risks exist in your house. The kitchen is the most dangerous room in the house because you deal with open flames on a gas stove and the oven can cause fires. Look out for places where electronics are plugged, in such as a computer room or around an entertainment center.
Keep all flammable items away from your stove, including dishrags. Clean all grease off your stove top and range head to prevent it from sparking a fire.
Remove any clutter that can burn up easily if a fire begins. Throw away or place in storage things such as stacks of magazines or newspapers.
Install smoke detectors to alert you to a potential fire before it begins. Place a screen in front of your fireplace to keep the embers from escaping when in use.
Do not plug too many electronics into one socket. Use a surge protector or energy strip to reduce strain on the socket. Inspect wires to make sure they are not frayed.
