How to Hook Up a Kohler Generator

Kohler Power has a strong reputation for supplying generators with excellent on-board noise reduction technology, making them ideal for applications where near silent operation is important. The company makes versions fueled by gasoline, diesel, natural gas and propane for marine, mobile, industrial and residential applications. “Hooking up” a generator can mean either connecting fuel to the upstream side of the unit or connecting the generated current to the circuits to be fed on the downstream side.

Connect the dedicated generator battery by attaching the cables from the battery terminals to the appropriate lugs on the back of the control panel; the lugs are clearly marked “live feed,” which indicates the positive connection. Use an adjustable wrench to draw down the nuts that hold the cables in place; the nuts are conventionally threaded, meaning “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.”

Attach the generator to the circuit that is to be fed by connecting the three wires left by the installers to their respective, clearly-marked terminals on the back of the control panel. The hot wire should be black or red, the negative wire white and the ground wire green. Kohler Power notes on its website that “Color-coded plug-and-play connections make hook-up foolproof.”

Connect the transfer switch to the control panel as directed by the manufacturer’s literature. A transfer switch monitors the supply of utility power. It initiates an automatic generator start-up sequence when the main power fails and shuts down the generator when main power is reinstated.

Read the installation manual to determine where the fuel line is to be attached then connect the fuel line according to these directions. The connection for all fuel types is made with a pipe fitted with a compression fitting on its end; thread the fitting onto the generator’s fuel inlet and turn it finger-tight then use the adjustable wrench to tighten it down. Ensure that fuel is supplied to the connection.
