Locate the temperature and pressure relief valve. A small handle on either the top or side of the hot water tank indicates the valve. The lever will be attached to a tube.
Put on your safety glasses. Pull the handle up with your index finger and thumb. Listen for the valve to open and water to flow through the pipe. If the valve did not open or you could not lift the handle, it’s broken and needs replaced.
Release the handle and allow it to fall back to its original position. The water should stop flowing immediately after you release the lever. If it does not, pull the handle up again and allow it to fall back into position. Don’t ease the handle down; just release it. If water continues to flow or leaks from the valve, shut off the water and replace the valve as soon as possible.
