How to De-Ice a Driveway With Boiling Water

During the cold, winter months, your driveway can turn into an icy area that is dangerous to your safety and to those who come in contact with it. Several commercial products will melt the ice. However, these commercial deicing products are often expensive and can sell out during the height of the winter season. Instead, use boiling water, which is a safer and cheaper alternative to expensive driveway deicers.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on warm clothing and a pair of shoes with good traction. Sweep the snow off the driveway with a broom. For large piles of snow, shovel the snow off the driveway with a snow shovel.

    • 2

Fill a large pot with water and set the pot on a stove. Turn the heat on "Medium" or "High" and allow the water to boil.

    • 3

Turn the stove off when the water begins to boil. Put on a pair of oven mitts and carefully remove the pot of water from the stove.

    • 4

Add several tablespoons of salt to the water and stir the solution with a spoon. Adding salt to the water will lower the freezing point and reduce the chance of the water freezing on the driveway.

    • 5

Sprinkle kitty litter or sand over the driveway to improve traction and reduce the chance of slipping and sliding while on the driveway.
