How to Make a Deadbolt Lock Hole for a Double Door

Double doors are typically fitted with some type of locking mechanism, but few locking devices are as effective as a deadbolt. Whereas a typically door lock only prevents the handle from turning, a deadbolt passes through the door and, in this case, into the frame of the opposing door. New deadbolts are offered in kits that come with the necessary mounting hardware and a paper cutting template, and are usually straightforward to install.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door and tape the paper cutting template included with the lock to the door with masking tape.

    • 2

Position a nail against the center of the lock hole as indicated on the cutting template and tap the nail through the template and into the door with a hammer. The purpose here is only to mark the door. Do not drive the nail through the door. Repeat the process to mark the center point on the edge of the door.

    • 3

Remove the cutting template from the door.

    • 4

Position the pilot of a hole saw fitted within a drill against the nail hole on the side of the door, then bore a hole into the door just until the pilot exits the opposite side of the door. The hole saw’s pilot is the metal shaft within the center of the saw.

    • 5

Position the pilot of the hole saw against the opening on the opposite side of the door and drive the saw through the door to complete the cut.

    • 6

Position the tip of a spade bit against the nail hole on the edge of the door, then bore a hole through the door and into the lock hole.

    • 7

Slide the lock bolt through the edge of the door.

    • 8

Position the two lock halves against the door and tighten the lock’s two securing screws with a screwdriver until snug.

    • 9

Measure the distance from the bottom of the door to the center of the installed lock bolt with a measuring tape and transfer this measurement to the edge of the opposing door. Tap a nail into the opposite door to mark the center point.

    • 10

Hold the strike plate against the edge of the door with the nail hole positioned within the center of the strike plate. Scribe a line around the strike plate, then remove the strike plate.

    • 11

Chisel away the wood inside the scribed line with a chisel and hammer. Remove small amounts of wood at a time to avoid removing too much wood. Chisel away the wood until the strike plate rests flush against the door.

    • 12

Hold the strike plate within the chiseled recess and mark the strike plate’s two screw holes onto the edge of the door.

    • 13

Remove the strike plate and drill two shallow starter holes through the screw hole marks.

    • 14

Hold the strike plate within the recess and tighten the strike plate’s two securing screws through the plate and into the edge of the door until the screws are snug.
