How to Burn Hickory Chips in a Gas Fireplace

For many homeowners, one of the advantages of having a gas fireplace is that it does not smell smoky. Others choose gas fireplaces for fuel efficiency but miss the rich, nostalgic smell of burning woods such as hickory. Just as barbecue chefs add a hickory aroma to their fires by using hickory chips in smoker boxes, you can make your own container and add the same scent to a gas fireplace.

Things You'll Need

  • Hickory chips
  • Bowl
  • Metal can
  • Aluminum foil

Instructions

    • 1

Soak hickory chips in a bowl filled with water for several hours or overnight and then place them in the metal can.

    • 2

Cover the top of the metal can with enough aluminum foil to extend down the outside a couple of inches and twist-tie it into place with metal wire.

    • 3

Punch holes in the aluminum foil to allow the hickory scent to escape.

    • 4

Put the can in the fireplace. Find a secure spot for the can to sit on the floor of the fireplace where it receives plenty of heat from the gas logs without touching them.
