How to Beef Up an Exterior Door

Exterior doors provide an entry point for potential burglars, but simple modifications strengthen your outside doors for increased security. An evaluation of your current exterior door setup helps you identify potential weaknesses that you can correct to beef up the area. Adding strength to the door itself is key in protecting your home's entries. You can support the strength of the door itself by making changes to the landscaping and area around the door to make it less appealing to burglars.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace the old lock on your door with a new lock. Another option is to have a locksmith change the locks for you.

    • 2

Install a grade one or two deadbolt on all exterior doors. If you currently have a deadbolt, replace the lock itself and the deadbolt strike plate for the greatest amount of security. Use 3-inch screws to secure these components, unless you have sidelight windows that are closer than 3 inches to the jamb.

    • 3

Remove the doorstop trim piece that the door rests against when closed, using a pry bar to gently pull it away. Drive 3-inch screws through the jamb where it is already tacked through shims when it was first installed. Tighten the screws only until they are flush with the jamb to prevent warping the jamb.

    • 4

Replace a screw in each of the hinges with a screw long enough to go through a wall stud. This makes it more difficult to kick the door down due to weak hinges or a weak door frame.

    • 5

Install a security system that protects all exterior doors. A professionally installed system is typically connected to a monitoring center that is able to send help if your door is compromised.

    • 6

Trim bushes that are near exterior doors. Keep landscaping away from the doors so burglars don't have a spot to hide. Add an exterior light by each door and keep them on at night as another deterrent.
