How to Build a Base for a Pellet Stove

Pellet stoves are neater, more efficient solid-fuel burning options than traditional wood fireplaces. You can install one in any room of your home, provided you put it against an exterior wall. Pellet stoves can be positioned closer to walls than space heaters, but you must protect the floor beneath it from both heat and the risk of exposure to fire. You can build a base for the pellet stove to rest on to protect your home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the bottom of your pellet stove with the measuring tape and add 12 inches to the result. The base should extend out 6 inches from beneath the stove, so if your stove is 24 inches by 30 inches, the base you build needs to be 30 inches by 36 inches.

    • 2

Nail the 2-by-4s together to form a frame for the pellet stove base.

    • 3

Choose the location for your pellet stove. Place the wooden frame on the floor in that spot.

    • 4

Remove any carpeting or linoleum that is inside the frame. They will be a fire hazard if you leave them in place.

    • 5

Create a cement mix according to the manufacturer’s directions. Pour the mix into the frame, filling it up to the top of the frame.

    • 6

Float a wooden smoother over the top of the cement, rubbing away any ridges and creating a smooth, even surface.

    • 7

Wait for the cement base to cure completely before installing the pellet stove on top of it. Depending on humidity and temperature in your area, this can take between two to four days.

    • 8

Remove the frame from around the dry cement base.
