How to Look for Bad Connections in the Attic

If you have an attic with electrical connections in it, you will need to inspect it regularly to make sure the connections do not deteriorate or create conditions for a fire. Because attics often are not occupied or visited frequently, their electrical conditions can become dangerous over time.

Instructions

    • 1

Examine any exposed wires hanging from the attic walls. Look for fraying and any splitting of the plastic casing. If you see this, hire an electrician immediately to replace the wiring. Exposed wires are very dangerous and can start a fire or shock you.

    • 2

Touch lightly plastic covered wires to determine whether they are warm or hot. Hot wires should be inspected by a licensed electrician.

    • 3

Inspect the light fixtures in your attic. Notice any odd sounds or smells such as clicking or smoke.

    • 4

Locate any open splices. Open splices are wires that have been separated and are not housed in a junction box. Hire a professional electrician to put them in a junction box, as this is required by code.
