How to Build a Cabinet Around a Craftsman Table Saw

Building a cabinet around a Craftsman table saw is a safety-conscious and practical way to prevent injuries in your home and also keep your table saw in great condition. This cabinet is built out of plywood held together with 4-inch metal brackets, protecting the table saw from damage. This structure can easily be mounted on the wall of a shop or underneath a workbench, allowing the table saw to be easily put inside it and locked up.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the depth and width of the table saw when folded up as compactly as possible. Add 2 inches to both dimensions and transfer these measurements to a 3/4-inch thick sheet of plywood. Cut out two plywood boards with these dimensions. Consider these identical boards the top and bottom of the cabinet.

    • 2

Measure the height and depth of the table saw when folded up completely. Add 2 inches to each measurement and cut out two plywood boards that match this measurement exactly. Consider these the side boards of the cabinet.

    • 3

Hold the side boards of the cabinet upright with their rear sides against the working surface. Set them parallel to each other. Position the top board perpendicularly against one pair of side board ends. Position the bottom board against the side boards' other ends. Arrange the four boards into an even rectangular frame.

    • 4

Slide 4-inch metal L-brackets between each two boards that touch each other, spacing the boards every 6 inches along the joint. Screw a 3/4-inch wood screw into each bracket hole to tightly fasten the frame boards together.

    • 5

Flip the frame over. Measure the dimensions of the rectangular frame from the outside edge of each board. Cut out a plywood board with these measurements to be the rear board.

    • 6

Set the rear board on the ground and position the bracketed frame on top of it. Position 4-inch metal L-brackets between the rear board and the frame, spaced every 6 inches. Attach the brackets in place with 3/4-inch wood screws.

    • 7

Cut out another plywood board that has the same dimensions as the rear board, minus 1/2-inch from each dimension. Set this board on top of the open space of the rectangular frame. Position two side-mount cabinet hinges between this board, which is the door, and the side board of the cabinet.

    • 8

Attach the hinges to the door and the side board with 3/4-inch wood screws. Position a two-part hinge between the door and the other side board, and attach it in place with 3/4-inch wood screws.
