DIY Roll-Down Storm Shutters

If you live in an area that gets strong storms or hurricanes, installing roll-down storm shutters can save your windows from becoming cracked or broken. Roll-down storm shutters, also known as hurricane shutters, are made out of metal and get mounted onto your home's exterior. When weather is favorable, leave the storm shutters rolled up so you can see out the window. When a storm is coming, pull the storm shutter down and lock it into the piece installed beneath the window for high-impact protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Center the roll-down shutter's hood approximately 2 inches above the window. Drive a 2-inch screw through the hood's top-left screw hole with a drill and Phillips driving bit. Set a level on the hood and adjust it so it runs straight across. Drive more screws through the remaining screw holes.

    • 2

Slide one of the side tracks into the gaps on either side of the hood. Hold the level against each side track, one at a time, and adjust them so they are plumb. Drive 2-inch screws through each screw hole. Push the end caps onto the hood's ends.

Unroll the rolled-up slats until you see the hanger holes. Attach the supplied hangers to the slat. Ask a friend to hold the slats while you hold the roll tube behind it. Drape the slat over the roll tube and allow it to hang down. Push each hanger into a slot in the roll tube.

Insert the roll tube into the hood. Unroll the slats slowly, centering them between the end caps. Position the last couple of slats into each side track. Latch the hood cover in place.

Put a tube of silicone caulk into a caulk gun and remove the tip with a utility knife. Run a bead of caulk along each gap where the side track meets the house.
