How to Make Electrical Outlets Less Noticeable

Covering exposed electrical outlets makes them less noticeable, especially for toddlers and young children, thereby reducing accidents while improving the appearance of the space. Young hands are quick to find floor- or wall-mounted electrical outlets, whether inside the house or outside on a deck or patio. Locking covers also reduce chances of electricity theft from exterior outlets when you are away. Concealing or making an electrical outlet less noticeable includes plugging the holes and attaching decorative faceplates.

Instructions

  1. Cover Plates

    • 1

Turn off the supply of electricity directed to the electrical outlet you are working wit. Do so at the fuse box. Working on a live outlet is dangerous and can cause an electric shock, therefore even the smallest adjustment on an outlet requires you turn the electric supply off.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the screws that hold an existing damaged or cracked outlet cover in place, if there is one already installed. The screws are typically located at the top, bottom and center of the cover. Hold the cover and set it aside. However, skip this step if there is not cover on the outlet.

    • 3

Center and place the decorative cover over the electrical outlet, ensuring the screw holes line up. Depending on personal preference, use a cover that completely covers the protruding outlet,or a smaller one that covers only the outlet’s face.

    • 4

Drive the screws provided with the assembly into the holes at the top, center and bottom of the cover plate. Do not overtighten the screws, as you could crack the plate. Turn the supply of power to the electrical outlet back on.

    Electrical Outlet Plugs

    • 5

Hold the plastic plug directly above the electrical outlet, with the prongs lined up against the slots in the outlet. Do this when the outlet is not in use.

    • 6

Push the plug into the electrical outlet to fully drive the prongs inside. The plug blocks the access to the outlet holes, thereby reducing chances of electrocution.

    • 7

Grasp the plug and pull it out when you wish to use the outlet.
