Involve your child in the feeding process to eliminate any kind of intrigue surrounding the dog bowls. Ask your toddler to fill the bowl with water or give her a scooper to pour the dog food. Emphasize that you need to walk away once the dog begins eating.
Give your child a bowl filled with snack food each time the dog eats. Fill the bowl with such healthy treats as raisins, granola or grapes. Explain to your toddler that both he and the dog have separate treats and separate bowls.
Set up a crafts and activities corner for your toddler. Fill the area with books, crayons, coloring books and games. Explain to your toddler that both she and the dog have separate areas for keeping their toys and belongings. Move your child to her corner any time she starts heading for the dog bowl. Plan an activity for your child, during the dog’s feeding time, as an added distraction.
Teach your toddler the importance of respecting the dog’s belongings. Tell your child he will lose a toy any time he antagonizes the animal or continually plays with the bowl. Follow through on the punishment.
Eliminate temptation by removing leftover dog food. Throw out any remaining canned dog food left in the bowl. Return dry food to the bag if the dog does not eat it.
