Hold one of the barricade brackets approximately halfway up the vertical door trim on one side of the door opening so that the open end of the bracket is facing upwards. Slide the bracket up or down slightly as needed so a bolt or board placed across the brackets of the door knob or deadbolt set will not interfere with its position.
Mark through the screw holes in the bracket and onto the door trim with a pencil. Drill one eighth-inch pilot holes through the marks and into the framing members of the door frame behind the trim.
Hold the bracket to the door trim again. Align the mounting holes in the bracket with the previously drilled pilot holes. Start each mounting screw by hand. Finish driving in the screws with a variable speed power drill with a Phillips bit installed.
Measure from the floor to the bottom of the just installed bracket with a tape measure. Measure from the floor on the door trim on the opposite side of the door opening and make a pencil mark. Install the remaining barricade bracket in the same manner. The bottom of the bracket must be on the pencil mark.
Measure the width between the two installed brackets from the outside edges of each bracket. Add 4 inches to this measurement. Transfer this measurement to the piece of lumber you will use as a bolt and cut it to length with a saw.
Place the board over the two brackets until it has an equal amount of overhang on each bracket. Slide the board downward into the brackets until it is fully seated. Remove the board to open the door.
