How to Install a Leslie-Locke Black Steel Security Door

Leslie-Locke steel security doors are strong-barred doors installed on the exterior of existing doors to provide another level of deterrent to the home. Black is the most common color, and the door consists of a welded-steel frame. The doors are engineered to be easily mounted, and their design allows you to have them hinged on either side of your door. Leslie-Locke doors are similar to most other precast security doors available at your local hardware store and can be installed by anyone with basic do-it-yourself knowledge.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width and height of the entry door opening where you wish to install the security door. Measure from the brick molding to the floor for the height, and between the brick molding on each side for the width. The brick molding is what the entry door sits in and is where you will install your Leslie-Locke door. These measurements determine the size of security door you need to purchase.

    • 2

Decide on which side you want the hinges. Leslie-Locke doors typically have three hinges. Either measure how far apart the hinges are and transfer these measurements to the brick molding, or hold the door up against the brick molding using a spirit level to ensure it is plumb. Place marks through the hinge holes.

    • 3

Drill a hole in the brick molding at each of these marks. Affix the hinges with flat-head screws and a screwdriver. Line the door rail against the hinges and screw in the hinge rail to them. Typically each hinge has three screws.

    • 4

Check that the door functions properly, swinging outward on its hinges. On the opposite side of the entry door mark where the lock plate attaches to the brick molding, either hold the plate up and mark through the holes or measure the distance between the holes to transfer the measurements to the molding. Drill holes on these marks. Attach the plate with flat-head screws.
