How to Use Elevators in Firefighting

Operating elevators in fire service mode requires specialized training in order to understand how it differs from normal operations. It is important for firefighters who routinely work with high rise structures to be familiar with each buildings elevators, its controls, and operations, since they may not all be exactly identical. This type of preplanning is essential in enabling a safe and rapid response in the event of an emergency.

Instructions

  1. Operating an Elevator in Fire Service Mode

    • 1

Obtain the fire service key from building management. Verify that all elevators have reported to the first floor and are locked out of service.

    • 2

Insert the fire service key into the control panel of the elevator car and rotate to the "ON" position. This removes the lockout and enables the car for fire service.

    • 3

Press the button for the floor below that on which the fire is reported and hold the "DOOR CLOSE" button until the doors close fully. Not allowing the doors to close fully will prevent the car from leaving the floor.

    • 4

Ride on the elevator until it arrives at the selected floor. When the elevator arrives, hold the "DOOR OPEN" button until the doors open fully. Releasing the button before the doors are fully open will cause the doors to close.

    • 5

Return the elevator to its recall floor by rotating the key to the "OFF" position when you are finished using the elevator. After the fire has been extinguished and the building is ready to be turned back over to management, you may then reset the elevator to normal operations by inserting the key into the slot on the exterior control panel (usually located on the wall) and rotating the key to the "RESET" position
