NYC Law for Fire Escapes and Flowers

Window boxes or rows of potted flowers in a window look beautiful from the street, but they should be placed on or near window sills, not on fire escapes.
  1. An Alternative Escape Route

    • When a fire breaks out, most people's natural instinct is to head for the door. However, if smoke or fire blocks your exit, it's vital to have another means of escape. Parents may be carrying young children. Fire escapes and ladders must remain clear so that residents can leave the building as quickly and safely as possible.

Panic Can Be Hazardous to Your Health

    • Smoke inhalation is the main cause of injury or death when a house fire occurs. Heavy smoke can not only cause panic but it can also obscure your view. In a rush to escape a fire, building occupants may not see flowerpots on a fire escape and may trip over them.

Fines May Be Levied for Violations

    • New York City fire codes exist to prevent fires and save lives. If a building inspector sees flowerpots, plants or any other obstructions on a fire escape, building owners may be subject to fines from the New York City Department of Buildings, which works in conjunction with the Fire Department of the City of New York to enforce fire safety codes.

    The Law

    • As per the New York City Department of Buildings, "A minimum clearance of 3 feet (914 mm) in all directions shall be provided from any fire escape or rooftop access ladder, as measured from each side of the ladder or landing."
