Homemade Window Well Covers

Window wells are found on the outside of a home and provide light for rooms in a basement, as well as a safe exit in case of fire or another emergency. While window wells provide fast access, they also pose an outdoor hazard.
  1. Function

    • Window wells permit builders to install larger windows in basements for more light and ventilation than a standard basement window provides. Window wells must have ladders so that occupants of a room can climb out of a basement room quickly in emergencies. Covering a window well reduces the falling hazards an open window well poses by placing a solid surface over the opening.

    Features

    • A window well cover made from heavy-duty acrylics or polycarbonate provides a durable and protective cover, reducing the chances of tripping over the lip of the window well or falling into the well. The clear material also lets more light into the room.

    Considerations

    • Acrylic or polycarbonate sheets can be cut to fit the dimensions of the window well. If security is a consideration, a sliding lock mounted on the inside of the window well can secure it. The lock must be easy enough for a child to open. The hinges must open out, permitting quick egress in case of a fire.
