Window Grilles That Do Not Require Padlocks

Window grilles and guards are intended for two basic purposes: fall prevention and security. Guards and grilles that require keys or tools to be removed can pose great risk during a fire by making emergency escape extremely difficult. Window guards that must be removed by tools or keys can turn a home into a death trap.
  1. Fall Prevention

    • The American Society for Testing and Materials' current standard F2090-01a regarding child safe window guards requires that all window guards have an interior release mechanism that operates without tools or keys. Window guards installed less than 75 feet above the ground are considered to be escape and fire rescue routes and must be equipped with a quick-release mechanism. Above 75 feet, quick-release mechanisms are not required because rescue equipment cannot attain these heights.

    Security

    • Window guards for security are used on homes as well as businesses and are usually installed on the ground floor. This type of guard is intended to prevent burglars from entering the structure but can pose a hazard when it comes to emergency escape (egress) and rescue (ingress). For this reason, window guards are now being designed with a quick-release device operated from inside a dwelling.

    Four-Point Quick-Release

    • A four-point quick-release consists of a rod in each corner of the window guard. The guard is installed on the outside of the widow. The corner rods run through the wall and attach to a lock box on the inside of a room. A lock box in each corner of the window is operated with a push button which releases the rods, allowing for removal of the guard from the inside.

    ASTM Guidelines

    • Quick-release devices should operate from the inside, without a key or tools and without detailed knowledge or great physical effort. To prevent accidental opening from the inside by a child, a release mechanism is operated by two single actions or one dual action. Hinged window guards are hinged on one side, not top or bottom, and swing inward. Fall prevention window guards may be attached to the window, its frame or the area around the window. The guard cannot obstruct light, ventilation and emergency escape and rescue equipment or personnel.
