How to Get Certified to Install Fire Doors

Installing fire doors is a skill which enhances and saves the lives of others. To become certified to install fire doors, a training course or apprenticeship will need to be completed. The Door and Hardware Institute have a team of more than 2,200 professional consultants and 900 apprentices. After completing the core curriculum, there are many fields to specialize in, including fire safety.

      Contact the Door and Hardware Institute (DHI). Apply to DHI Consultant Certification Exam using the Consultant Certification Exam Application form. Prepare to share personal details including your name, address, phone number, company details and business category.

      Indicate which type of door consultancy program you want to complete: Architectural Hardware Consultant (training to recognize hardware requirements for doors including fire compliance), Certified Door Consultant (training to construct and apply doors with full fire safety) or Electrified Hardware Consultant (training in the coordination of door openings with security systems including electrical fire alarms).

      Choose to become a member to receive discounts on fees for the exam, or pay the full fee of $745.00, outlined in the DHI application form. Provide credit card number, account number, billing address and signature to complete payment process.

      Continue studies after completing the first exam by pursuing the Continuing Education Program (CEP). A consultant needs to earn 100 points in one 3-year period to renew or obtain your "Seal" or stamp, which enhances recognition as a door specialist. Architects, home owners and builders value this qualification.

      An apprenticeship is offered to individuals at least 18 years of age. Prepare to work four days a week at a company that specializes in fore door installation and fire safety and one day a week at college learning the theory of your chosen subject. According to the British Woodworking Federation, this can take 2- or 3-years. An employer can apply for funding to assist with training costs.

      Join FIRAS when you are certified, particularly if you operate in the UK, by registering online. Allow FIRAS to add company credentials to their Register of Certified Installers. This will enhance your reputation in the fire door installation trade. Make sure to check the Fire Door Maintenance box if this is your primary discipline.
