How to Secure a Fire Ground Ladder at the Top

A fire escape ladder can make the difference in saving your family from injury or death in case of a house fire. Many escape ladders have large hooks at the top that are designed to fit over the window sill and secure the ladder in place. If your escape ladder doesn't have these hooks or if your window sill is too wide for the included hooks, you can secure the escape ladder to the window sill with a few inexpensive supplies.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Two 4 1/2 by 3/8-inch stainless steel screw eyes with 275 pound rating

Instructions

    • 1

Mark two drill sites 12 inches apart on a solid portion of the window sill, the wall or the floor. The location you choose must be where you can drill at least four inches into solid material, such as a wall stud or window frame.

    • 2

Drill pilot holes, then insert and screw in the screw eyes. Use the wrench to turn the screw eyes until only the eye remains above the surface.

    • 3

Detach the existing handles or hooks from the top of the escape ladder. Hook one carabiner or spring hook into the top most chain or rope hook on each side of the escape ladder.

    • 4

Hook the carabiners or spring hooks onto the screw eyes. Lower the safety ladder for use.
