How to Use a Fire Escape

A fire escape is a specialized ladder located on the sides of commercial and residential buildings that give residents a quick escape method in the event of a fire. Most fire escapes have to be accessed through a window and in larger buildings each floor has a fire escape access window so that residents do not have to go in search of the floor that has one. When in a building it is important to familiarize yourself with the fire escape locations so that in the event of a fire you are prepared.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the access window to the fire escape balcony. Check fire escape plans or maps located in main hallways to confirm the room that has a fire escape balcony.

    • 2

Exit the building from the window onto the fire escape balcony. Take the ladder down to lower level balconies, if applicable, until you reach the bottom fire escape balcony.

    • 3

Locate the fire escape ladder's release handle. This handle is located to the right or left of the ladder, which will allow the fire escape ladder to lower to the ground from the last remaining fire balcony.

    • 4

Pull the handle downward to release the ladder. Do not put your hands in between the ladder and the sliding mechanism or they will get stuck. Stand back; the ladder slides down the sliding mechanism. Do not use until the ladder has stopped moving.

    • 5

Climb down the ladder toward the ground for safety.
