How to Draw a Fire Diagram

Fire diagrams, often called fire escape plans, consist of a marked floor plan of your home or business. These diagrams include markings for each possible exit from a room, including both doors and windows. To turn your fire diagram from a simple piece of paper into a life-saving tool, practice escaping from each room on a regular basis. If people unable to escape on their own live in your home, determine who should help those people escape if there is an emergency.

  Draw a floor plan of your house. Draw a rectangle to represent each room. Each rectangle should sit next to another rectangle and should be drawn in scale. For example, if your home consists of three small rooms, draw three small rectangles in their appropriate place. If your home has two or more levels, draw each level inside a unique rectangle.

  Write down the name of each room inside its rectangle.

  Draw a small square on the floor plan to represent a door. Draw the square so that it intersects the outline of the room. Draw a square for every door of your home, in the appropriate place. Represent the windows by drawing a small circle in the place of each window.

  Add a representation of the stairs by drawing a series of parallel lines.

  Draw an arrow extending from inside a room to its exit. Draw an arrow for each possible exit from a room. For example, if your bedroom has two doors and one window, draw three arrows. One arrow extends from inside the room to just beyond a door. Another arrow extends from inside the room to just beyond the other door. The final arrow extends from inside the room to just beyond the window.

  Mark the location of a fire extinguisher with a star.

  Draw the outside meeting place. For example, if you plan to meet at the tree in front of your house, draw a puffy tree and mark it "Meeting Place."
