What Are the Benefits of Window Well Covers?

Window well coverings are an attractive addition to basement windows that have deep wells. Window wells do have their drawbacks, as they can fill up with debris that you need to clean out every year. Sometimes you may even see a skunk or some other wild animal caught in your window well. Covering your window wells provides a number of benefits.
  1. Visual Appeal

    • Window covers can hide window wells that would otherwise look unsightly. By adding a grate or dome cover, you are enhancing the look of the foundation and the surrounding landscaping. When you have a cover on the window well, you won't have debris falling down inside, which can look unsightly if it's not cleaned out.

    Protection

    • Window well covers will prevent animals from falling down inside the well. If you have a skunk get caught in your window well, you or someone else is going to need to remove the animal. Using a cover will eliminate this possible problem. Window covers will also prevent squirrels and cats from using the window well as a protected spot for giving birth.

    Security

    • You can safely keep your basement windows open without the threat of someone entering your home through the open window if you have window well covers in place. Although someone could remove the window covering to gain access the house, this takes time and makes noise, which can alert you or your neighbors to the threat.

    Safety

    • If you have window wells near patios or in areas where you have a garden, the domes or grates will prevent you or someone else from falling in the window well. Whether the window well is deep or shallow, when you accidentally step into a window well, you could break a bone or at the very least pull some muscles.
