How to Get Snow Out of the Doorway

Snow in a doorway is a common occurrence after a winter storm. More than a nuisance, doorway that's full of snow presents a significant hazard. Over the next few days the snow may thaw and refreeze to create ice. The ice may partially block the doorway or create a slippery surface under an innocuous looking layer of snow. To prevent any potential problems, get snow out of your doorway as soon as possible, ideally early in the morning before any traffic starts.

Instructions

    • 1

Move to the outside of the door. Trying to shovel your way outdoors from indoors will result in a significant mess.

    • 2

Shovel or scoop the snow out of the doorway. Remove snow in the middle of the pile first to clear a pathway. Start from the top of the snow pile and work your way down. Then move on to either side of the pile.

    • 3

Dump the removed snow on the lawn or in a no-traffic area.

    • 4

Sprinkle de-icing salt over the ground from which the snow pile was removed. The salt will melt subsequent snow drifts before they build up again. Alternatively, place a heated entrance mat in front of the doorway. Plug it in when precipitation is high. Don't attempt to melt the snow pile with de-icing salt. When it refreezes it will form a formidable puddle of ice right in front of your door.
