How to Anchor a Halligan Tool Into Drywall to Attach Escape Rope

A Halligan is a specialized tool carried and used by firemen to assist them in fighting fires and rescuing people from unsafe environments. The Halligan has an axe-type end and a handle with a forked-pointed end. This tool is used in a wide variety of ways by firefighters and it is considered standard and essential equipment. One way the tool is used is as a safety harness anchor, which allows a firefighter to escape an elevated room quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the end loop of your safety harness belt over the handle end of the Halligan tool.

    • 2

Face the window. Press the handle end of the Halligan tool firmly to the drywall 6 inches to the side of the window trim and 12 inches above the window sill. Poke a hole in the drywall.

    • 3

Bring the tool upward firmly so that the length of the tool breaks the drywall above the penetration point. Slide the handle down into the wall cavity so that the axe head is lodged in the entry point.
