How to Get a Job Test Driving Cars

Get a job as an automotive writer. Send out resumes to a number of newspapers and magazines that cover the automotive industry in some way, even if it's just a weekly section. Not only will you attend many public relations events that promote new vehicles and offer test-drives to journalists, you'll be able to make contacts within the manufacturing industry and arrange for tryouts of the newest vehicle models. Manufacturers loan you a new car for a few days at a time--usually with a full tank of gas--in order for you to take it for a spin. In return, you offer your evaluation of its handling, specifications and features in an article to be published in a newspaper or magazine, or on a website.

Work for a company that provides cars to journalists. Manufacturers contract with businesses to provide new vehicles to automotive journalists in order for them to test-drive them for a feature story. Search online and contact car manufacturers to find out the names of these companies and apply for a driver position, where you spend the day delivering the newest vehicles to different locations and picking up other cars in return.

Become a mechanic. With automotive-repair skills, you can get a job as a mechanic, where you are constantly involved with vehicles. Many repairs involve taking cars out for test drives in order to diagnose problems or ensure that a problem has been fixed correctly. While not driving too far, this gives you the opportunity to get into a number of different vehicles, ranging from the smallest subcompact to the pricest sports car.

Become a salesperson at a car dealership. Part of the job is to take potential buyers out on test drives, and either you or the customer drive around to get a feel for the vehicle. You get into a number of different makes and models, and learn about all of the newest features and amenities.

Find dealerships that offer test-drive incentives. Enter the dealership under the guise of wanting to purchase a vehicle and take a car for a drive to see if you like it. Many places offer incentives for these types of visits, such as gift certificates, free restaurant meals or even cash. Be sure to get yourself on a mailing list in order to qualify for the freebies.
