Formula to Calculate the Cost of Carpet Cleaning

If your home is filled with carpeting and there is much foot traffic, professional cleaning, at least once a year, will help preserve your carpet's appearance and durability. Some professional cleaners charge a certain price per square foot, while other contractors may charge by the room. Regardless of how the job is priced, you can do your own research by calculating the price for yourself, then using this amount as a basis for comparison when shopping around for a carpet cleaning contractor.
  1. Measuring

    • For any carpeted room, you just need to measure length and width of the room. Multiply these two numbers to get the square footage of the room. For hallways, just measure width then total length of the hallway. Stairways are charged differently depending upon the contractor, but a rough square footage measurement can help you plan for those, as well. Add the square footage for each carpeted room and hallway together to get the total square footage to be cleaned.

    Calculating

    • The national average cost for carpet cleaning ranges, as of 2009, from 30 to 35 cents per square foot. Some contractors will give this price for homes that have over 1000 square feet to be cleaned. If you fall below their minimum, then the cost per square foot will rise. To calculate your carpet cleaning cost, simply multiply the total square footage to be cleaned by the average cost per square foot.

    Considerations

    • You may want to call around to different cleaning contractors to find out their fees for additional services, such as moving furniture or heavy soiled/stained areas. Sometimes the additional fees can add up more quickly than the cost of the cleaning itself.
