Homeowners in Ohio should not remove asbestos tiles from their home. The Ohio Department of Health suggests all homeowners hire an asbestos hazard abatement contractor for any job, regardless of size, involving the removal of materials with asbestos. For asbestos tile projects that require the removal of more than 50 linear or square feet of asbestos containing materials, homeowners must either become certified as asbestos hazard abatement workers or hire a contractor to complete the job.
Ohio does not have its own requirements for the removal of asbestos tiles, though all contractors must comply with the laws and regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration. In addition, contractors must notify the Department of Health 10 days before starting a project.
Homeowners who choose to remove a small area of asbestos tiles from their home should dispose of the tiles in a landfill that accepts asbestos waste. A list of participating landfills is maintained by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
