• Occupational Safety and Health Administration has danger signs that can be displayed when power lines are downed or are being repaired. Workers that have to perform their duties near or in an area where downed power lines are located should follow safety precautions as outlined by the warning signs. They should also adhere to the safety standards issued by the Institute of the Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Fire Protection Association.

Health

• According to Medline Plus, health concerns pertaining to power lines are debatable. Even though this is the case, caution should still be exercised for people that come into frequent contact with power lines. Electric magnetic fields are usually created wherever power lines are present, and these areas of energy that surround electrical power lines can become increased when power lines are exposed. These fields can be potentially dangerous since they can provide electrical shock once an open power line is emitting electricity. Overhead signs can be displayed that warns people about the dangers that they pose.

Electric Hazards

• Downed power lines can spark and hum. This electricity is capable of sending electricity through tree limbs, concrete and automobiles. Individuals are encouraged to stay away from downed power lines and motorists who are trapped in their automobiles due to downed power lines should remain inside of their vehicles until help arrives. Emergency and utility workers can post warning signs within an area to warn people about downed power lines. Flammable substances and materials should be removed or kept away from exposed power lines.

Downed Power Lines

• The Ohio State University issues a Campus Emergency Guide. A chapter within this booklet informs faculty and students about what do when a power lined is downed. It advises employees and students to keep a safe distance from any downed power line, and informs the staff and scholars not to pick up a power line that might be dangling within their immediate location.
