How to Figure Concrete Calculations

Concrete is used for various building and construction projects. The key, when dealing with concrete, is to determine the correct amount that you will need to fill the space. If you calculate too little, you will not have enough to finish the project, forcing you to purchase more, which will cost you time and money. If you calculate too much, you will spend more money than you need to on materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length, depth and width in feet of the area that you want to fill with concrete. Multiple the three measurements together to get the volume of the area in feet. If the area is a cylinder, then find the height and radius in feet. Square the radius, multiple it by the height and then multiple the answer with 3.14. This will give you the volume of the cylinder.

    • 2

Divide your volume by 27 to find the cubic yardage of the area that you want to fill.

    • 3

Multiply the cubic yards by 1.10. This will give you 10 percent more than the exact amount that you need. You want to have a little more to be sure that you have enough.

    • 4

Round up to 1 cubic yard if your calculation in Step 3 is less than 1 cubic yard. If you calculation is more than 1 cubic yard in Step 3, round up to the nearest 1/4 cubic yard. You do this because most concrete companies will not deliver less than 1 cubic yard and amounts in 1/4 cubic yard increments.
