How to Repair Scratches in Black Painted Wood Furniture

Furniture with a black-painted finish stands out in a room, whether the decor is modern, country or traditional. Unfortunately, any scratches or mars also stand out against the raw wood underneath. You can easily repair minor scratches at home, while large gashes or extensive damage may require completely stripping, sanding and repainting the furniture.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill in the scratch with a black crayon or liquid shoe polish.

    • 2

Apply a wood filler product to deep scratches. Squeeze or paint the wood filler (depending on the type) slowly, using the smallest amount needed to fill the scratch. Dry overnight or for several hours.

    • 3

Lightly sand the scratched area to smooth the wood filler, blending it with the surrounding wood.

    • 4

Paint the wood filler with black paint. When dry, sand it lightly to soften the edges of the paint.
