How to Use a Measuring Tape With a Loose Hook

If you purchased a new tape measure and noticed the metal hook on the end is loose, you might think it's a flaw in the construction. Actually, it's designed that way. The hook slides exactly the same distance as its thickness. That allows the tape to adjust itself for measuring objects that you can hook the end over, such as a board, as well as objects that you must butt the end against, such as the inside of a box or doorway.

Instructions

  1. Outside Measurements

    • 1

Fit the tape measure's hook over the outside edge of the item you want to measure, such as the end of a board.

    • 2

Press the button or lever to release the tape. Slide the tape measure's housing away from the hooked end to extend the tape.

    • 3

Release the button or lever to lock the tape. Pull away from the hooked end with enough tension so the hook stays all the way out. The inside of the hook will be lined up with zero. The reading on the tape measure will be the exact distance from the inside of the hook, and therefore the distance from the end of the object you're measuring.

    Inside Dimensions

    • 4

Press the button or lever to release the tape. Draw enough tape out of the housing to measure the length you need.

    • 5

Lay the tape on the surface you want to measure, with the hook butted against the perpendicular surface at the end.

    • 6

Press the tape snugly against the perpendicular surface so the hook slides all the way in, while the tape lies flat against the surface you want to measure. The outside of the hook will be lined up with zero. The reading on the tape measure will be the exact distance from the outside of the hook, and therefore the distance from the perpendicular surface.
