How to Stain Door & Window Trim

Door and window trim are accents that enhance the beauty of your doors and windows. Trim is generally stained to match either the door or the window it is framing, becoming an extension of the natural woodwork of each. Ideally, the trim should be stained before it is put in place, just because it is easier to work with then. But by being careful, trim can be stained when it is already mounted.

  • Work table or saw horses
  • 100-grit sanding sponge or sandpaper
  • Cotton cloth rags
  • Fresh water

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down your trim on a work table or across saw horses if it is not attached.

    • 2

Sand the surface with either a 100-grit sanding sponge or 100-grit sandpaper. A sanding sponge works better because it will mold to the contour of the trim. Remove all bumps, protrusions and irregularities through sanding, and always sand with the grain.

    • 3

Wipe the sanded trim off with a cotton cloth rag to remove dust. Ideally, dampen the rag with fresh water first to remove all of the dust, then wait until the trim has completely dried before going on to the next step.

    • 4

Put on a pair of latex or disposable gloves, then apply the stain of your choice with a high quality staining brush. China bristled brushes work well for this application. Dip your brush in the stain and apply it by brushing with the grain. Apply it evenly, and literally saturate the wood. Wipe the stain off with a new cotton cloth rag immediately after application, beginning at the point where the application first began.

    • 5

Dry brush all cracks, crevices and edges to spread the stain evenly. A brush will spread the stain where the rag wasn't able to reach, and dry brushing needs to be done immediately after wiping down the stain with a rag.

    • 6

Allow the stain to dry thoroughly. It can be used as is or a finish of your choice, such as varnish, clear coat, or polyurethane, can be brushed on over the top for durability.
