How to Choose Mitre Saw Blades

Mitre saw blades are commonly used to make precise cuts when sawing through materials such as wood, plastic or soft metal. When purchasing a mitre saw blade it's important to take into consideration the task at hand. The saw diameter, tooth count and hook angles are all key factors when choosing a mitre saw blade.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a mitre saw blade with the specific diameter for the size of the object you're cutting. Blade sizes range from 8 to 20 inches. The blade should reach at least 2 inches past the the object you're cutting.

Select a mitre saw blade with a tooth count that caters to your project. Determine what kind of material you're cutting through. Flat top teeth are great for cutting quickly with the grain of the wood. Use an alternate top bevel tooth blade for a smooth cut against the grain. Select a triple chop tooth blade to cut through most any material. The triple chop blade is best for cutting cleanly through metal or plastic.

Choose a mitre saw blade according to its hook angle. The hook angle is the angle at which the teeth are set on the blade. The faster the speed of the saw, the less hook angle is needed. Choose a mitre saw blade with a more acute hook angle for softer materials.
