DIY TimberFrame

Building your own timber frame is a challenging task because it requires several different skills. It involves architectural design, construction expertise, woodworking skills and knowledge about timber. Therefore, doing it yourself will require learning the tools of the trade if you are inexperienced. However, constructing your own frame is more cost effective, you have control of the project, and it can be undertaken at your own pace, using help as required.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an architectural drawing for your timber frame. This involves drawing a detailed plan of the frame. Detail the dimensions, quantity, type of wood and structure that will be used to turn the timbers into a frame.

    • 2

Decide what timbers to use, find a supplier and obtain quotes for the timbers. Using this information, generate a budget for the project. This means you can ensure that you can afford to see the project through to the end and plan for unexpected costs, such as cracked timbers that need replacing.

    • 3

Build a scaled down model of the timber frame as a test. As Foner Books outlines, build a 1:12 scale model to show how the frame is constructed, then solve any structural problems that arise from this. Add further timber supports or wooden features if necessary.

    • 4

Choose whether to build the timber frame on or off the piece of land it is assigned to. Building it off site allows it to be moved in completed sections from a separate construction site.

    • 5

Employ a construction team to help you build the timber frame. Constructing scaffolding, for example, cannot be undertaken alone. A timber frame for a house requires a helping hand. Keep it more like a DIY project by managing the staff, minimizing the workforce and keeping costs down. Complete as much of the work as you can before they arrive.

    • 6

Order the required precut timbers for delivery to the construction site. Make sure you have the appropriate equipment for cutting the timbers to the right length and for attaching them together.

    • 7

Count the timber when it arrives and make sure you have all the pieces to the giant timber jigsaw puzzle. Call the supplier if you are missing any parts and return any damaged, cracked or discolored wood.

    • 8

Construct the timber frame by following the plan designed in Step 2. Begin by connecting timbers horizontally on the floor in sections, before attaching them together in an upright position.

    • 9

Use a variety of woodworking methods for a professional and strong frame. Use jigs, planes, circular saws and sanding techniques to create the timber frame.
