How to Cope Ogee Molding

An ogee molding refers to the shape similar to an S, forming an upper convex and lower concave shape on the face profile. Installation of ogee molding on inside corners require fitting of the joints with a cope. This method is used to enable the molding to expand and contract, ensuring a tight joint. Miters should not be used on inside corners because expansion and contraction of the molding will cause gaps in the joint. The coping method applies to all profile molding applications.

Instructions

    • 1

Swing the miter saw to the right and lock it on a 45-degree angle.

    • 2

Place the ogee molding on the right side of the miter saw with the finished surface facing toward you and extend the molding past the saw blade. The molding must be positioned in the miter saw in the same manner as if it were installed.

    • 3

Hold the molding firmly and cut the 45-degree miter through the ogee molding.

    • 4

Place the ogee molding on a solid work surface with the 45-degree end extending past the end of the work surface.

    • 5

Cut the ogee with the coping saw by sawing along the cut made by the miter saw. The face of the ogee molding reveals a profile line formed by the miter saw cut. This is the line to cut with the coping saw.

    • 6

Complete the cut by following the profile while turning the coping saw as the blade moves through the ogee molding.
