How to make non-toxic wood waterproofing

To keep wood from warping or splitting, waterproofing is essential. There are many commercial waterproofing products from which you can choose. The consequence, however, is often harmful chemicals that release toxic fumes into the air or leave residue on skin. In today's eco-conscious society, we are learning the benefits of finding non-toxic, earth-friendly alternatives.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply stain or wood filler to the wood and allow to dry thoroughly. It cannot be applied after sealant.

    • 2

Remove any dust or debris from the wood. A bucket of warm water with a little laundry detergent in it and a scrub brush can be used on patio decks or any other surface that needs a good cleaning. Rinse off all detergent and let the surface dry completely before moving on to the next step.

    • 3

Thin tung oil with citrus solvent using equal measures of both liquids. This allows the oil to absorb more quickly into the wood. If you are unable to get citrus solvent or do not want to use it, skip this step.

    • 4

Apply a thick first coat of tung oil with a soft rag. Let it set for 40 minutes to soak into the wood. Watch for puddling or excess oil and wipe these away with a clean rag.

    • 5

Lightly sand the surface after the oil has soaked in to let the second coat soak in faster. Do this only if you did not use the thinning agent.

    • 6

Apply a second coat of oil. If it is not glossy after 40 minutes, let it soak in completely overnight.

    • 7

Repeat the application process in step 6 until the oil stays glossy after 40 minutes. This means the wood won't absorb any more oil. To check, once it has dried, splash a few drops of water onto the surface. They should bead up and stay on top of the sealant.
