How to Drill a Straight Hole Into a Door Without a Drill Press

Many pieces of door hardware require precisely straight holes for proper installation. This can be difficult because doors are large and difficult to place in a drill press if one is available. While an electric drill is more convenient it poses challenges in keeping the holes straight. Fortunately, using a few tools as references eases the task.

Things You'll Need

  • Electric drill
  • Two squares with flat surfaces

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the frame, if necessary, and place on saw horses or another convenient work surface.

    • 2

Place two squares on the work surface. Use squares with flat edges that will stand upright with one of the pieces of the square extending upright. Place one square so it provides a visual reference for straight from a left to right perspective and the other so it can be viewed to determine the straightness of the bit in regard to movement toward or away from the operator.

    • 3

Visually eye the bit in reference to the two squares as the hole is drilled. Work slowly and check the bit against both the squares to insure the bit stays straight in all directions.
