How to Set Up a Stacked Dado Set

A stacked dado set is a pair of specialized circular saw blades combined with a number of chippers that are sandwiched between the two blades to create a dado (a groove cut in the middle of a board) or a rabbet (the same groove, cut along an edge). The width of the cut is determined by the number of chippers that are installed. You can set up a stacked dado set on a table saw or a radial arm saw, but for safety, never on a circular saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the table saw's power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Lift the insert out of the saw table. Raise the saw blade, and loosen the arbor nut on the arbor with the saw's wrenches. Slip the nut and washer off of the threaded arbor, and then slide the saw blade off of the arbor.

    • 3

Inspect the inner and outer blades. The inner blade will have the arrows pointing in a clockwise direction, whereas the outer blade's arrows are counter-clockwise. Each blade has a 1/8-inch cut (or kerf). Install the inner blade onto the arbor, with the side with the writing on the left, against the arbor washer.

    • 4

Slide one or more of the chippers onto the arbor, with the top of the chipper tooth pointing toward your body. Then after the desired number of chippers are installed, slip the outer blade onto the arbor. Attach the outer arbor washer and the arbor nut, and tighten with the saw's wrenches.

    • 5

Lower the blade beneath the table top. Insert a new zero-clearance throat plate into the saw's throat. Turn on the saw, and ease the blade upwards to cut the necessary groove in the throat plate.

    • 6

Turn off the saw. When the blade stops turning, adjust the height to the desired depth of cut. Adjust the fence to the necessary position, turn on the saw and complete the cut.
