How to Use a Bench Saw

A bench saw or table saw is a practical shop tool. The saw has a table and a circular blade and makes straight cuts into wood. You can adjust the depth of the blade and the fence, or guide, on the table for making a wide variety of cuts. Bench saws also accommodate a wide variety of blades for cutting different types of wood and for special types of cutting operations.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses prior to working at a table saw.

    • 2

Clean off the bench top of the saw with a shop brush. It is important to start each cutting operation with a clean surface.

    • 3

Unplug the saw. Adjust the height of the saw blade by moving the height adjustment knob until the desired height is reached. Lock the blade height in place.

    • 4

Adjust the fence or guide to the desired distance from the blade based on the location of the cut you desire to make into the wood. Lock the fence or guide in place.

    • 5

Plug the saw in. Turn the saw on. Hold the wood flat against the bench surface and fence or guide. Slowly guide the wood through the saw, keeping your hands clear from the blade. Continue pushing the wood through the saw and follow through guiding it until the cut is complete and clear from the path of the blade.

Remove the board and cut-off scrap from the bench surface. Turn the saw off.
