How to Build a Workbench for a Home Garage

The basic work bench provides an elevated surface that is level and stable. Erecting a work bench in a home garage is a simple matter of building a free-standing table that is open on the front. The project outlines the basic design but allows you to customize the dimensions or add-ons, such as drawers, cabinets, or shelves. The project can be built in approximately one hour with the proper tools and supplies. The work bench is an open-faced table with four support legs and horizontal support beams.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut three 2-inch by 4-inch wood beams to 5-feet in length with a miter saw. Cut four 2-inch by 4-inch wood beams to 3-feet long. Cut the 4-inch by 4-inch wood beams to 4-feet tall for the legs.

    • 2

Measure 6-inches from each edge of the plywood sheet. Draw a straight line that creates a rectangle 6-inches inside the perimeter of the plywood sheet.

    • 3

Assemble a basic box frame with two of the 5-foot beams and two of the 3-foot beams. Connect the ends of the 5-foot beams to the sides of the 3-foot beams so that the 4-inch by 5-foot face of the 5-foot beams is flush with the 2-inch by 4-inch ends of the 3-foot beams. Drive two 2-inch self-tapping wood screws through the 3-foot beams into the ends of the 5-foot beams.

    • 4

Set the plywood sheet onto the box frame so that the box frame lines up with the rectangle outline made in Step 2. The 5-foot sides will sit inside the rectangle and the 3-foot sides will sit outside the rectangle on the sides. Drive 4 self-tapping screws through the plywood into the sides of the box frame for each 5-foot side and 2 screws for each 3-foot side.

    • 5

Turn the table over and set the four 4-inch by 4-inch beams into the corners of the box frame so that the beams are perpendicular to the surface of the plywood. Drive 2 screws through each side of the box frame into each of the two connecting sides of the 4-inch by 4-inch beams, resulting in 4 screws per beam.

    • 6

Attach the remaining 5-foot beam to the halfway point of the 4-inch-by 4-inch beams. Drive two screws through the 5-foot beam into each 4-inch by 4-inch beam. Attach the 2 remaining 3-foot beams to each side in a similar fashion and even with the 5-foot beam.

    • 7

Turn the table over. Drive 2 screws through the top of the plywood into the top of each of the 4-inch-by-4-inch beams for additional stability.
