How to Build Your Own Guitar Amp Stand

Having to constantly bend over to adjust the tuning or volume on your guitar amp while you are playing can be a hassle. To solve this problem, you can easily build a cabinet-style amp stand out of wood. Assembling this bookcase-style stand is easy, as supplies are minimal; main parts include a piece of plywood for the back, and four to five boards.

Things You'll Need

  • Sheet of plywood
  • 1-inch thick boards (at least two feet in width)

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the dimensions of your guitar amp, as the dimensions of your stand will depend on the size of your amp. Typical guitar amps are approximately two to three feet in height, at least two feet in width and two feet in depth or thickness. The thickness or depth of your amp is important to know because you want a shelf long enough to fit your amp without its front edge hanging over the side. Make sure to write these measurements down. Typical amps are not much thicker than two feet. However, if you have a larger amp, you may need a larger piece of wood.

Purchase the wood to build your stand. You will need two side boards, one top board, and one or two extra boards, depending on how many shelves you want inside the stand. The top board should be four feet in length. The side boards should be at least five feet high. The shelf board or boards should be 47 3/4 inches.

    • 3

Cut your pieces of lumber accordingly with a saw.

    • 4

Screw the top of the top board into the top of the left side board. Screw the right side board to the top board.

    • 5

Attach the L-shaped brackets to the inner walls of the side boards. Use a screwdriver to screw in the wood screws. The number of L-brackets you install will depend on the number of shelves you want to add. It is recommended that you have at least two shelves, one to hold your amp and the other on which to store foot pedals or cords. Thus, you will need to install two L-brackets per shelf.

    • 6

Slide the shelf boards in so that they rest on the brackets. Screw wood screws in from the sides to reinforce the shelves. Once screw on each side of each shelf should be sufficient for reinforcement.

    • 7

Use a saw to cut the plywood back for your shelf. The piece of plywood should be five feet high and four feet wide.

    • 8

Use wood screws to affix the plywood back to your amp stand.

    • 9

Use a hand saw to cut a 6-inch by 6-inch square in the back side of the plywood to run your amp's power cord through.
