How to Seal a Wood Countertop

A wooden countertop in your kitchen adds a natural look to the room, but is likely to absorb spills and traces of food if not properly sealed. Sealing your countertop will save you the hassle of constantly scrubbing out stains. Whether or not you intend to prepare food directly on your countertop, take care to seal the entire surface. Use different sealers, however, depending on how the counter will be used.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean everything off your countertop and clean it with a damp sponge and a bit of dishwashing soap. Dry the countertop with a clean cloth.

    • 2

Squeeze mineral oil directly onto the wood and use sandpaper to work it into the wood. Use mineral oil only for areas where you will be preparing food. Always move in the direction of the wood grain. After 30 minutes, wipe off excess with a clean cloth.

Use a clear polyurethane finish to seal wood counters that will not be used for cutting. Apply the polyurethane with a foam brush, using long strokes in the direction of the wood grain. Use at least two coats, sanding the surface with wet, fine-grit sandpaper between coats. Allow the polyurethane to dry overnight before using the counter.
