How to Tell If a Drill Bit Is for Metal

Drill bits serve a wide range of applications. Some will drill through concrete while others will drill through steel. You have many ways to recognize the different drill bits. It will only take a few minutes to organize them, so you will not have to spend all day trying to determine what bit you need to drill through metal.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the description on the front of the drill bit package. The package will tell you if the bit is designed for metal.

    • 2

Flip the package over. Look to see what the bits are made out of. If the bits are made of out of carbon steel or high speed steel, they are designed for drilling into metal.

    • 3

Look at the end of the drill bit tip. If the tip is pointy, it is designed for wood and metal. If the tip is anything different, it is for some other material such as concrete or brick.

    • 4

Look at the drill bit's color. Some pointed-tip drill bits are gold in color. Gold bits are dipped in Titanium Nitride, which hardens them, making it easier to cut through hard materials such as metal.
