How to Build a Coat Rack

A coat rack is a basic woodworking project that you can complete as a weekend do-it-yourself project. The rack is mounted to the wall and features four decorative metal coat hooks. The hooks are mounted to a hardwood board. The board can be painted or finished with a clear wood finish to showcase the natural beauty of the wood. This style of coat rack is ideal for mounting in a mud room, entry hallway or workshop.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hardwood board with the 8-by-24-inch side flat on a work surface.

    • 2

Measure in 4 inches from each end of the board and mark the measurement in the center of the board's width using a tape measure and pencil.

    • 3

Position the board on the table of a drill press with one 24-inch edge flush against the fence of the drill press table.

    • 4

Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the board at each pencil mark, using a 1/4-inch drill bit. These are the mounting holes. They are spaced 16 inches apart so you can fasten them into wall studs.

    • 5

Sand the entire board with 120-grit sandpaper, in the same direction as the wood grain, until it is completely smooth. Wipe off the dust with a tack cloth.

    • 6

Brush an even coat of wood finish onto the board with a paintbrush. Allow the finish to dry for 24 hours.

    • 7

Place the board flat on a work surface. Position one coat hook at 3, 9, 15 and 21 inches in from one end of the board. This will result in four evenly spaced coat hooks on the board. Center the hooks so they are centered within the width of the board.

Fasten each hook to the board with the mounting screws that were included with the hooks. Drive each screw through the holes in the hook into the board with a screw gun.
