Examine the blade. This is important because the teeth do the cutting and removal of debris cutting. You will be looking for bends in the teeth. The teeth are the part that do the cutting. If the blade is bent, it will not run smoothly through the wood.

Examine for rust. Rust can be either surface rust or deep rust. The best way to check for surface rust is to try and flake away a small portion. If it flakes and there is still metal, the saw blade may be good. If it is bubbled, and flakes only to reveal more rust, do not purchase it. The blade is no good.

Examine the wood handle. The handle is important because it is the delivery mechanism for the stroke of the blade with the hand and arm. If there are any cracks, you will need to determine if the cracks are so deep that they may cause breakage. If the cracks are beyond repair, do not purchase the saw.
