Homemade Band Saw Fence

A band saw is commonly used for cutting curves in pieces of wood. However, with the addition of a band saw fence, the band saw can be used to make straight cuts as well. This is a common practice when resawing lumber into thinner strips on the band saw. Many band saws don't come equipped with a fence for making straight cuts, but you can make a homemade band saw fence that can be just as effective as a commercial fence.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a 24-inch-long section of 2-inch by 4-inch lumber with the wide edge flat on a work table. Stand a 24-inch-long by 6-inch-wide piece of 3/4-inch-thick plywood on edge along the 2-inch-high side of the 2-inch by 4-inch board, with the ends aligned. Use the right-angle edge of a combination square to keep the boards at 90 degrees to one another.

    • 2

Hold the two boards in place, and predrill a screw hole through the plywood and into the center of the 2-inch by 4-inch board every 6 inches along the joint.

    • 3

Drive a 2-inch deck screw through each of the holes, adjoining the two boards. Keep the combination square in place as you're joining the two boards to make sure the plywood stays at a right angle to the 2-inch by 4-inch board.

    • 4

Position the fence assembly with the 2-inch by 4-inch board flat on the band saw's table — and the plywood protruding upward — to the left of the saw blade. Keep the edge of the plywood of the fence parallel to the miter slot in the saw's table.

    • 5

Clamp each end of the 2-inch by 4-inch board to the table, using woodworking clamps. This will secure the fence in position while you use the fence and the band saw to make straight cuts.
