How to Use Plastic Wood

Plastic Wood is the name of a wood filler product offered by the DAP company. It is used to fill dents, holes and gouges in wood. Plastic Wood is easy to work with and is applied using a putty knife. When the product dries, it can be sanded, painted or stained just like real wood.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the dent or gouge using the sand paper to prep the surface of the wood. Sand the paint or stain all the way down to bare wood in the gouge to be filled. If the gouge has sharp, hard edges, sand it so the gouge is wider with softer edges. Although it may seem like you are making the problem worse, the Plastic Wood will blend in better when you are finished.

    • 2

Use the plastic putty knife to apply the Plastic Wood into the gouge. Push down with the putty knife to fully force the Plastic Wood into the gouge. Leave a mound of Plastic Wood sticking up higher than the surface of the wood. This mound or bump will be sanded down when dry. The Plastic Wood may shrink when it dries, so having this extra material sitting proud of the surface is desirable.

    • 3

Wait until the Plastic Wood is dry, then sand the excess down so it is flush with the surface of the wood. Drying time is approximately two hours with gouges up to 1/8 inch. It may take up to 24 hours to dry for gouges larger than 1/4 inch.

Use the brush to apply paint or stain to match the surrounding wood. If the wood is not stained or painted, Plastic wood is available in multiple colors to match the wood as closely as possible.
