How to Do Wood Molding

Wood molding can add the finishing detail to a project. While there are many wood moldings available for purchase, you can make your own molding as a do-it-yourself project. The advantage of making wood molding yourself is that you can customize it to your needs. For example, if you are making a walnut bookshelf, you could make matching walnut molding to complete your project. There are a number of router bits that you can select to make the molding. Select one with a profile to suit your needs.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the molding bit into the router table. Adjust the height of the bit and the fence so that it will cut the profile of the bit into a 1-by-2-inch board.

    • 2

Place the board onto the table of the router with the 1-by-96-inch side flat against the table and the 2-by-96-inch side flat against the fence.

    • 3

Guide the board through the router in a steady motion just fast enough to allow the blade to cut the wood. Remove the board from the router table once the cut is completed.

    • 4

Sand the routed side of the board with a 120-grit sanding pad until the surface is smooth. Rout some extra board so that you will have some left over to allow for mistakes or repairs.
